Lead by Example
I started Forward Movement Consulting (FMC) four years ago after deciding to leave my job and give myself unbridled time to birth my oldest daughter. Because my journey to motherhood was complex and at times difficult, I knew that I wanted to give myself and my body space to fully experience the transition into motherhood. I anticipated that a lot of things would change – and one thing I knew for sure was that I wanted work to be different, to feel different, and to fulfill me in a different way than I had allowed it to before.
My deep knowing that change was eminent was a source of clarity. I was certain, with conviction grounded in faith, that things would work out. Yet, what was not clear was how, why, and when this change was coming.
After 15 years of building a career in the social justice movement working in philanthropic and racial justice organizations, I had built a solid set of skills, expertise, and knowledge. My networks were strong and my purpose and commitment to help uplift and strengthen access, opportunities, and resources for communities of color was clear. I had a good sense of what my strengths were, what opportunities for growth existed for me should I choose to work on them, and a host of lessons learned. I had the opportunity and privilege to witness great victories and wins, experience how to truly receive from and give to others, and witnessed from so many how to lead with compassion, grace, resolve, and power.
My partner, family and friends provided me the anchor and foundation to explore this change without restrictions or boundaries. I gave myself permission to create my own approach to work, life, and what balance and flexibility I desired. It was, perhaps, the most freeing time of my life. During this transition time from becoming a mother to launching my consulting practice, I fully embraced all of who I am with truth and radical honesty. I nurtured my soul and spirit. I tended to my relationships and connections. I worked hard at accepting all of me. I embraced being a mother, a partner, a wife all at the same time. The change was, and still is, constant.
Over the last four years, I have built FMC to be a firm that engages with clients, communities, and organizations that are fully grounded in our values and approach. Each year we continue to reflect, assess, and refine our core services to ensure we are giving the very best. My growth as a leader is directly connected to my ability, privilege, and commitment to lead with authenticity. I am leading FMC by this example.
Currently, FMC offers coaching, consulting, and leadership assessments to clients. This year we will also be offering a masterclass series on authentic leadership. We look forward to talking, collaborating, and partnering with you in the future!
Thank you for following our journey.
